[Bleacher Nation] - Coach Pavelski? Draft Combine Wrap, Growing NCAA Impact, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The 2026 NHL Draft Combine is now complete. There’s a ton of information, stats, heights and weights, grip strength numbers and anonymous quotes floating around the interwebs on which players are the best and who needed to do more. I’m going to come back later today with more draft-related thoughts, but wanted to specifically pass along this piece from Ben Pope that’s Blackhawks-centric for the . Blackhawks notes from the NHL combine: Chase Reid's dinner Caleb Malhotra another possibility Connor Bedard name-drops— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) Every year we get a celebrity guest appearance from some of the top prospects at the Stanley Cup Final. The six prospects who will be attending this year are forwards Gavin McKenna and Caleb Malhotra and defensemen Chase Reid, Carson Carels, Keaton Verhoeff and Alberts Šmits. The increasing transition to college hockey was evident at the combine as more players are committing to go the NCAA route. Mike G. Morreale at included this staggering stat in his post-Combine write-up: Since May 1, there were 73 college commitments made, 44 of which were directly from the Canadian Hockey League (60.3 percent). Since Jan. 1, there have been 272 total commitments, 132 of which are directly from the CHL (48.5 percent). You see some crazy notes pop up from the Combine. This one made me chuckle. Vladimir Dravecky's dad (also named Vladimir Dravecky) is younger than both Brent Burns and Corey Perry (born June 3, 1985). — Steve “Dangle” Glynn (@Steve_Dangle) This caught me off guard over the weekend. I’ve seen Joe Pavelski at the United Center a few times over the past couple years chatting with players on the Blackhawks and/or their opponent. He’s so widely respected by players and coaches/managers that it isn’t a shock to hear his name in this context. But… it feels so soon? Like, it feels like he could still be on the ice in these playoffs? Instead, Elliotte Friedman broke the news this weekend that Pavelski is apparently one of of candidates to speak with the Toronto Maple Leafs about their head coaching vacancy in recent weeks. An unexpected name surfaces in Toronto’s coaching search — Joe Pavelski. According to multiple sources, the Future Hall-of-Famer is on the Maple Leafs’ radar. has more. — Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) NHL Network released their rankings of the top prospects for the 2026 NHL Draft. Here they are for your consumption and commentary. Presenting NHL Network's rankings for the 2026 prospects! Thoughts on the rankings? — NHL Media (@NHLMedia) Finally, the NHL announced Connor McDavid is this year’s winner of the Ted Lindsay Award. That’s the player-voted MVP, for those scoring at home. And McDavid has won it before. More than once. Connor McDavid, YOU ARE the Ted Lindsay Award winner for the fifth time! The award is presented annually to the most outstanding player as voted by the players. — NHL (@NHL) BLEACHER NATION: | Subscribe to the

[Bleacher Nation] - Let’s Talk About Ivar Stenberg’s NHL Draft Stock After the Combine

One of the NHL Draft-related pieces I look forward to every year is Corey Pronman’s post for The Athletic after the NHL Draft Combine. In it, he unloads a ton of intel from scouts, scouting directors and front-office executives on the top prospects, the flaws with the perceived perfect and sleepers folks should maybe consider a little more than they are/were. This year’s edition of the NHL Draft Confidential doesn’t disappoint, and there’s one specific section that I think is Must Read territory for Blackhawks fans. Pronman has a really good, informed discussion about the draft stock of the guy Blackhawks fans want most: . He’s a 5-11 winger who has a sky-high hockey IQ and skill to potentially play at the NHL level immediately this fall. Most Blackhawks fans feel Stenberg could be the missing piece in Chicago’s top six. The Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg debate is red-hot and will stay that way until we hear the first name off the board at the 2026 ! Who would you take? — NHL Media (@NHLMedia) Fans love to zero in on one or two players for their team to draft, and then collectively don’t like it when the name called isn’t “that guy.” I remember how hard Eagles fans booed Donovan McNabb, and how angry Sabres fans were that they had to “settle” for Jack Eichel. And, right now, some Blackhawks fans will confidently tell you there’s no chance on the good Lord’s Earth that Stenberg makes it to No. 4 overall. Zero. Nada. Even if the entire free world is screaming that San Jose needs a defenseman and the Canucks might take their new head coach’s son — who happens to be a strong, 6-2 center — at No. 3 overall. Proman shares comments from his sources that give us all of the reasons that Stenberg is considered one of the top forwards in this draft class — and why he really might be there for the Blackhawks at No. 4. Ivar Stenberg’s Draft Stock Stenberg did not work out at the Combine after playing a lot of hockey this year. He represented Sweden at the World Junior Championship and then in the men’s World Championship in May, all while putting up historic numbers for a teenager in the SHL. No, I do not think him making that decision has any bearing on his draft stock. He has elite hockey sense, and we’ve already discussed all of the attributes that scouts and front office executives love. It’s easy to see why fans all over the NHL want their team to stake Stenberg as soon as possible — and some want their team to trade up to get him. HOLY MAMA IVAR STENBERG. — Nathan "Grav" Murdock (@NathanGraviteh) But here’s the issue with Stenberg: he’s a 5-11 winger. And, as Pronman wrote, “ drafting a sub-6-foot winger high always carries inherent risk.” A couple of the individuals quoted by Pronman noted that, in the context of this year’s draft class, there are strong cases to be made for other players in the top five overall picks around Stenberg — especially the big defensemen at the top of this year’s NHL draft class. “The media talks about him and McKenna like they’re the consensus top two guys, but I don’t think teams have it that way,” an executive revealed. “My guess is most teams have one of those guys in their top 2, and then a defenseman or . I could honestly see Stenberg get closer to 5 than to 1; he’s not the same type of talent as McKenna.” and “People talk about this guy like he’s a slam dunk to go 1 or 2. It reminds me of William Eklund’s hype; he was in everyone’s top five, and then he goes 7. When teams get to meetings, and they describe a smaller winger who isn’t dynamic to their GMs, he will start moving down lists.” The concern, if you even want to call it that, with Stenberg is a perception voiced by the scouts and execs Pronman spoke with about his “B game.” If he doesn’t hit as an 80-90 point guy, and winds up being a 50-something point winger in the NHL, it’s really hard to justify taking a wing at his size at inside the top five overall selections. The other reason Stenberg could slide to the Blackhawks at No. 4 is the crop of defensemen in this year’s NHL draft class — a strength of this year’s group we’ve been hearing about for 12 months. Here’s what Pronman wrote about the class before breaking down the group individually: There’s an immense amount of love for this year’s top defensemen. The sheer variety of profiles — from towering, physical defenders to elite, smooth-skating puck movers — means teams will have their pick of premium assets. I bring all of this up here for a couple reasons from a Blackhawks perspective: First, based on everything we continue to read and hear about this year’s draft class, Hawks fans should be excited that they are going to get a very, very good player with the fourth overall pick. Second, there is a legitimate case for Stenberg “falling” to the Blackhawks at No. 4 in the draft. If he is indeed the guy the Blackhawks want and are targeting, the perception that they would “need” to trade up to get him might not be based in reality as much as the comments section m...
