On Monday morning, the Blackhawks traded their 2024 third-round pick (No. 92 overall) to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 2027 third-round pick. trade alert🔔 details📰 ➡︎ — Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) The deal ends an odd series of events, which started late last week when Scott Powers of The Athletic mentioned that the Blackhawks were in danger of losing their exclusive rights to sign Pridham based on how his career has evolved in the years since being drafted by Chicago. With no official college commitment to extend rights down the road, Chicago had until 5 p.m. ET on Monday to sign Pridham. When asked about it in the days after, Pridham was noncommital on his future. Scott Wheeler of The Athletic that he was being told Pridham would not sign in Chicago. Pridham went on to win the Memorial Cup with Kitchener on Sunday night and now his professional rights have been given to Tampa. Powers has since reported that next season for an undisclosed team, keeping his rights with the Lightning until that college career ends. The main lingering question from all of this is why Pridham decided to not sign with the Blackhawks, with : ” … the sense I get is that he wanted an opportunity that the Blackhawks weren’t willing to promise him, and so the 2024 third-rounder will now try to find that somewhere else.” Wheeler also mentioned that Pridham didn’t have the best performance during the OHL postseason and had an increasingly reduced role as the playoffs continued, which further suggests this may not be too massive of a loss for the Blackhawks’ prospect pool.
