[Bleacher Nation] - ‘I’m Going to Truly, Truly Miss My Friend:’ Horace Grant Remembers Bulls Comrade Stacey King

The Chicago Bulls lost a franchise legend over the weekend. Three-time Bulls champion and Emmy-winning, 20-year Bulls broadcaster Stacey King far too young, at age 59. The No. 6 pick out of Oklahoma in 1989, King became a beloved bench big during the Bulls’ inaugural three-peat, claiming titles in 1991, ’92 and ’93 alongside Chicago immortals Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant. He was traded to Minnesota for Luc Longley during the 1993-94 season. Grant departed for the Orlando Magic that summer. King finally called it a career in 1999 after also suiting up for the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks in the NBA, as well as clubs in the CBA, Turkey and Argentina. Oklahoma Sooners forward Stacey King Horace Grant Recalls a Young Stacey King, in College and Chicago In an exclusive conversation with Bleacher Nation, Grant recalls the first time he was made aware of Stacey King the hooper. “My twin brother [, also later a long-time NBA big man] played with Stacey at the University of Oklahoma for a couple years. They played against Danny Manning and Kansas in the ’88 NCAA Finals. Unfortunately, they lost, but during that time, I was watching Stacey of course with my brother in college. At that time, he had a great game. His basketball IQ was unmatched to a certain degree.” King was a superstar at the NCAA level. He was named to the 1988 NCAA All-Tourney and All-Region Teams, became the 1989 TSN and Big Player of the Year and a consensus All-American, and nabbed a pair of All-Big 8 Tourney awards. He became a full-time starter as a junior for the Sooners, during that fateful 1987-88 season next to Harvey Grant. In his final two collegiate years, King averaged 24.0 points on 53.3 percent field goal shooting and 69.6 percent free throw shooting, 9.2 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 1.5 dimes, and 1.0 swipes. He would slot in as more of a role player for a loaded young Bulls squad. “But when I first met him was after the Bulls drafted him. I think we were at [the Bulls’ pre-Berto Center practice facility] the Multiplex. We were introduced to each other. Stacey was so humble and we just started talking about basketball and talking about my brother. We just became friends at that moment.” Grant also remembered it took a second for King to gather his NBA bearings during an eventual All-Rookie Team 1989-90 debut pro season. “When he was coming in as a rookie, he was working out for the Bulls, and he couldn’t tell the difference between [then-assistant coach] Phil Jackson and [then Chicago forward] Dave Corzine. Phil was working Stacey out,” the four-time All-Defensive Teamer notes. “He thought PJ was Dave Corzine, and they got into a shoving match because Phil was being very physical with him. And I remember [GM] Jerry Krause saying to Stacey, ‘Don’t you know who that is?’ Stacey said, ‘That’s Dave Corzine!’ Krause said, ‘No, that’s an assistant coach, that’s Phil Jackson!'” Legends in Session hosts Horace Grant and Wally Lockhard III with Stacey King. Stacey King’s Big Bulls Moment Grant recalls an especially dire moment early in the Bulls’ dynastic run, when King’s presence helped swing a closeout game and possibly secure the franchise’s legacy. “So many great moments with him on the court, but one that stands out: in , myself and a majority of the starters were playing like crap. Phil brought Stacey, Scott Williams and Bobby Hansen off the bench.” Bulls point guard BJ Armstrong, who had not been promoted to a starting role over an aging John Paxson, was also playing for Chicago during this critical bench run. “Stacey and the [reserves] — especially Stacey — brought us back from 15 points down.” Jackson reinstalled Jordan into the lineup to help bring the Bulls home and claim their second title. “Without Stacey — especially Stacey — we’re going to Game 7. And there’s just so many uncertainties in a Game 7. My hat goes off to, especially Stacey, [but also] Bobby Hansen and Scott Williams.” Before his death, King . Fans of Grant, King, and the dynasty-era ’90s Bulls will want to drop what they’re doing and tune in to King’s Legends in Session “Hall of Legends” induction. It’s a great, now-posthumous celebration of the literal decades of joy King has given the Chicago faithful. Bonded by their time on the hardwood, Grant and King maintained a close relationship until King’s death. “Such a great friend. A guy that you could call at 2 a.m. in the morning. He would answer the phone for you and listen to you. I’m going to truly, truly miss my friend.” King made sure to let his passionate personality shine through both on the court during his Bulls playing career and in the broadcast booth as one of the best regional commentators in the modern league. Listening to Chicago’s rebuild without him going forward is going to be a deeply strange experience. He will be greatly missed. Bulls basketball will never be the same. Also Read
