[Broad Street Hockey] - Could the Flyers’ 21st overall pick be on the move?

The Philadelphia Flyers are starting to turn a corner. They made the Stanley Cup Playoffs and won a round for the first time since 2020, and general manager Danny Briere has the team on the track to contention. It’s another key offseason for Briere and the Flyers front office, and that starts with the NHL Entry Draft in Buffalo on June 26. In each of the past few years, the Flyers had multiple first-round picks heading into draft night, and plenty of picks on Day 2 as well. However, it’s a bit different this season as the Flyers only have one first-round pick and five selections total in the seven rounds. Given that the Flyers only have the 21st overall pick in the first round, they could look to make another draft-day trade. They traded back to select Jett Luchanko two years ago, then traded up to draft Jack Nesbitt last year. I discussed the possibility of the Flyers trading that 21st overall pick with Madeline Campbell and Joe DeMarini on . Ryan Gilbert: Speaking of trading the pick, how likely do you think that might be? And do you think it’s likely to trade up, trade back, or maybe trade for a center or a roster player? Madeline Campbell: I hesitate to put a number on it, but just considering how willing they’ve been over the last few seasons to move around in the draft, it would not surprise me at all. Especially considering they have the capital elsewhere in terms of roster players to potentially make a move to move up. Certainly would be something I would be interested in seeing them explore. Joe DeMarini: We’ll see, I guess? I think they do trade it, and they’re going to do it during the draft party, and we’re all going to be — shades of 2021 when they traded the pick for Risto. Madeline Campbell: Don’t even. Don’t even! Ryan Gilbert: No, not shades of Risto. Not shades of Risto. Joe DeMarini: I don’t mean a stupid Chuck Fletcher-esque move. I just mean we’re all going to get super stoked for the pick, they’re on the clock, and all of a sudden they move back. If the Flyers were to trade the pick for a roster player, the Seattle Kraken could be an interesting fit. They have two young centers in Matty Beniers and Shane Wright, and given that they’re stuck in neutral, it could make sense for them to look to get even younger.
[Broad Street Hockey] - NHL finally clarifies Maple Leafs’ first-round pick conditions owed to Flyers

When the Philadelphia Flyers dealt Scott Laughton at the 2025 NHL trade deadline, it already looked like a good deal by general manager Daniel Briere. They received Nikita Grebenkin as well as a 2027 first-round pick in exchange for the longtime Flyers forward, a fourth-round pick, and a sixth-round pick. There were conditions attached to that Leafs’ first-round pick, though, and unless you’ve been living under a rock in recent months, you . Along with adding Laughton in 2025, the Leafs also traded their 2026 first-round pick to the Boston Bruins in a package for defenseman Brandon Carlo. That pick, too, had conditions along with it, and that’s what has truly complicated which Leafs pick the Flyers will ultimately receive. The pick that the Leafs traded to the Flyers is top-10 protected, and the pick they dealt to the Bruins turns out to be top-five protected. So when Toronto won the lottery, it pushed the pick to Boston back by a year or possibly two. But it looks like we reportedly have some clarity on the situation. NHL reportedly provides clarity on Maple Leafs’ first-round picks On Wednesday afternoon, The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz reported an update on the draft pick situation. “Per a league source, the NHL has informed the Flyers that while they own the Maple Leafs’ 2027 first round pick (Laughton trade), the Leafs still have the option to transfer it to Boston if it’s in the top 10,” Kurz . “In that event, the Flyers would receive Toronto’s 2028 first rounder.” This mostly falls in line with what had been speculated regarding the Leafs’ future first-round picks, especially after they won the draft lottery in May. And it benefits the Flyers. The Bruins, of course, are one of the Maple Leafs’ biggest rivals. If Toronto does end up with a top-10 pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, it wouldn’t make sense for them to give it to Boston rather than Philadelphia. That would be like the Flyers giving a top-10 pick to the Penguins instead of the Bruins. However, the Maple Leafs could galaxy brain this, depending on how the 2026-27 season unfolds and their outlook for the 2027-28 campaign. If the Maple Leafs look like they’re going into a rebuild and could have an even better pick in 2028, they might opt to give the 2027 selection to the Bruins, especially if it’s in the 8-to-10 range of the top 10. In that instance, the Flyers would then get an unprotected first-round pick from the Maple Leafs in 2028. All in all, though, it looks like the Flyers will likely get the Maple Leafs’ pick in next year’s NHL Draft. This is important for the Flyers as it can help them maneuver the trade waters with other teams. Knowing that they’ll likely have another first-round pick in 2027 rather than 2028 may make it easier for them to include their own first-round pick in a trade. While it still isn’t set in stone, it’ll be nice for Briere & Co. to have some clarity heading into the offseason.

[NBC Sports Philadelphia] - D-man with ‘unbelievable maturity to his game' could be option for Flyers at No. 21

For the first time in a while, . That, of course, makes life a little different for the club’s amateur scouting staff leading up to the 2026 NHL draft. Barring a trade, the Flyers will pick at 21st overall. It’s their lowest first-round spot since 2020. But that was when the Flyers drafted a foundation piece, . So the Flyers know the draft is still critical to what they want to do, even when they’re lower in the order. “, we wanted to build a team that was going to be here for a long time; not just to go for it for a year or two,” general manager Danny Briere said last month. “That’s still the same approach on my end.” The Flyers have only five picks in this draft, which will be held June 26-27. The first round is Friday at 7 p.m. ET, while Rounds 2-7 are Saturday starting at 11 a.m. ET. “I’ll tell you how I feel about drafts and I’ll be totally blunt with you,” TSN director of scouting Craig Button said last Tuesday in a phone interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia. “I think it’s f—ing bulls–t when I hear about, ‘Oh, this draft isn’t as good.’ Here are the numbers. Approximately 45 players from any draft will play 350 games or more in the NHL. It might be 47 one year, 42 another year. That’s the number — you get 45 players that’ll play 350 games or more with varying degrees of success. “And I know this about the draft. The teams that get good players from the draft say it was a good draft. The teams that don’t get good players from the draft say it wasn’t a good draft. So when people start telling me about a draft ahead of time, I call bulls–t.” Last summer, , with six coming over the first two rounds. Porter Martone was . Now the Flyers will try to hit on a pick in the 20s. “What you’re trying to do is find a player that you feel has the potential to be an NHL player,” Button said. “That might be a third-line center, that might be a second-line scoring winger. Hey, listen, maybe you get David Pastrnak, who’s a superstar (drafted 25th overall in 2014). “But the focus has to be on, ‘OK, what type of player do we like, what type of player do we think the guy can be?’ And then get after it and understand what the development path is, and then try to help that player be the best he can be. Put a stake in the ground and celebrate who you’re drafting.” Before the draft arrives, we’re breaking down first-round targets for the Flyers. Next up: Juho Piiparinen Position: Defenseman Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 204 Shoots: Right Team: Tappara Scouting report The 17-year-old is a proficient defender, one you can trust and rely on to keep the puck out of your net. He stays within himself with calculated reads and execution. He knows the right play can sometimes be better than the outstanding play. And when he’s in his own end, he’ll lock things down. “He’s heavy, he’s hard, he’s smart, he’s effective and he doesn’t try to be anything but that,” Button, a former NHL GM and scout, said. “I’ve watched Juho for a couple of years now and I watch a guy that doesn’t make mistakes.” Playing against men in Liiga, Finland’s top pro league, Piiparinen didn’t have a goal this season through 29 games. He recorded three assists, 46 shots and a plus-6 rating. The age and strength of his competition definitely factored into his offensive numbers. But Piiparinen is not a guy that will light up the box score. At the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship, he had an assist, four shots and a plus-6 rating in four games for Team Finland. “Is he going to produce tons of points? No, I don’t think he will,” Button said. “But you cannot be a good offensive team unless you’ve got guys that can make plays under pressure in the defensive zone, get the puck moving the other way, get the puck into the hands of the right players at the right times. I think he has got such unbelievable maturity to his game at a young age.” Piiparinen is slotted at No. 19 on . “He knows who he is, he knows what he is,” Button said. “In the offensive zone, he’ll play on the power play. But he’s a thinker, he knows, ‘OK, I’ve got to get the puck in these spots.’ He doesn’t try to be a catalyst specifically; he tries to be somebody that’s a cog in the wheel. I love him.” has Piiparinen as the sixth-best international skater, but he’s ranked No. 33 overall by and No. 40 on . Button likened Piiparinen’s defensive-minded approach to Rasmus Ristolainen. After being drafted eighth overall in 2013 by the Sabres, Ristolainen was given an . “They asked him to be a big-time point producer, big shot and everything,” Button said. “I think Rick Tocchet, what he did with Rasmus this year, the way that Rasmus played in the regular season and the playoffs, I think it’s almost like Rasmus just said, ‘I can just be myself, I don’t have to be this big offensive guy.’ And he was incredibly effective.” (Matt Krohn/USA Today Images) Fit with Flyers Players like Piiparinen are valuable pieces to a team’s back end. But at No. 21, it would be understandable if the Flyers wanted a defensemen with mo...

[Broad Street Hockey] - 2025-26 Player Grades: Owen Tippett takes a major step forward

It feels like every week we heard that . It makes sense– he’s one of the fastest skaters in the league, , and was the team leader in goals with 28. He’s got all the ingredients to make an elite player on a team-friendly contract for years to come. The speedy winger doesn’t turn 28 until February of next season, so he’s squarely in his prime with what feels like another level to reach. All of this comes together to make him one of the most on a team desperate to add talent down the middle. Games Played Goals Assists Points PIM Shots on Goal Shooting % Average TOI 81 28 23 51 32 221 12.7 16:50 This was probably Tippett’s most successful and well-rounded season as a player. Goal scorers are streaky, and he had to learn how to better impact the game during stretches where he wasn’t able to score. There was some concern when his shots on goal decreased from a career-best 289 in 2023-24 to 188 the next year– a sharp decline that saw him struggle to clear 20 goals and not a single power play tally– but he rebounded nicely by matching his 28 goal high water mark and getting back to 50 points. Most importantly, we saw Tippett set a career-high in shooting percentage. He’s missing fewer shots, but he’s also taking more high percentage ones from closer to the net. At 210 pounds with his speed, there’s not many players that could prevent him from driving the net, and he really figured that out this season. It’s so realistic to think he should be a 35 goal scorer in this league, and yet the best version of him we’ve seen has not been able to crack 30 yet. It just seems like a matter of confidence and mentality for Tippett, who upped his physicality in a big way with over 150 hits. (5v5) Goals For % Expected Goals For % Corsi For % High-Danger Attempts For % PDO 48.4% 54% 49.5% 55.9% 98.9 These are good 5v5 numbers, though the results could be a little better. The process is there: high Expected Goals For and High-Danger Attempts are great. Impossibly, he was on the ice for a worse 5v5 save percentage than last season, despite the addition of Dan Vladar and controlling the majority of High Danger chances, which seems like the answer for the Goals For percentage not matching up. This should bounce back a little in his favor next season. As far as deployment goes, Tippett at 5v5 received the fewest offensive zone starts of his Flyers career as well as a coinciding jump in defensive zone starts. This actually plays well to his strengths, allowing him space to get his legs moving the other way to outrun the defenders before they’re set in. The line combos is where it gets interesting. Tippett, per , spent the majority of his time with Christian Dvorak and Trevor Zegras: 210 minutes together with a 50.6 percent Expected Goals share. The best line of the bunch was the Denver Barkey and Sean Couturier trio: a near 65 percent share in 165 minutes– far and away the most effective of lines with 100 minutes together. Reducing that cutoff more and more, Tippett’s lines shoot up to the top of the list, until you’re all the way down to 20 minutes. Out of 37 combinations of forwards to play 20 minutes with the Flyers together, Tippett is on each of the six best performing lines on either wing by Expected Goals share, and five of them with Zegras as his center. (5v5) Points per 60 Primary points per 60 Shots on goal per 60 Shot attempts per 60 Expected Goals per 60 2.09 1.76 9.72 19.13 1.21 Losing Tippett to injury in the second round was devastating to their already unfavorable chances to beat Carolina. The initial diagnosis was a — a tear of tendons attached to the pelvis– with against Pittsburgh. It’s unclear when exactly the sports hernia occurred, as we knew Tippett wasn’t following the regular practice structure. The recovery is not so simple either; we experienced a long down-period for Claude Giroux and Shayne Gostisbehere years ago coming off similar core surgeries in the past. Despite the surgery, Tippett has said he’ll be ready for training camp. Giroux wasn’t himself for about a year, but medicine can come a long way in a decade. Did Owen Tippett live up to expectations? Tippett needed to prove that last year was an aberration. He wasn’t shooting enough, physical enough, or confident enough. He did so this season. As far as expectations, he should probably be a regular 30 goal guy, but it’s not like he’s ever done that before to set the bar. Eight more goals than last year and getting back over 220 shots is about where he needs to be anyway, but it’s good to have a bounce-back season. Overall, it was a big success for Tippett to realize what he’s capable of in other facets, but we’re still waiting for that next jump in production. What can we expect from Owen Tippett next season? Had he not needed core muscle surgery, the expectation would certainly be 30 to 35 goals. He’s squarely in his prime, and on a team good enough for 98 standings points without Tyson Foerster and Porter Martone for most of the year should be a dec...
