[NBC Sports Bay Area] - Ian Rapoport sheds light on when 49ers' standoff with Brandon Aiyuk could end

Once considered one of the NFL’s most promising young wide receivers, 49ers pass catcher future in the league remains a mystery. While he accused San Francisco of “” and being afraid to release him in an Instagram post on Sunday, general manager John Lynch has made it abundantly clear throughout the offseason that he . So, when will this saga end, and when will Aiyuk return to the field? NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported on Monday that he doesn’t foresee a resolution anytime soon. “I think we’d like to avoid some similar IG (Instagram) messaging from Brandon Aiyuk, we’d rather the situation be settled rather than having this drag on through the summer, but that’s the way I see this going,” Rapoport said. “First of all, he’s what the San Francisco 49ers would like; they have his rights, he’s not due any guaranteed money, he forfeited that by not showing up to his rehab. They would like to trade him, probably to the Commanders with his old friend Jayden Daniels. … “They’re all staring at each other. There’s really no deadline to make a move at all, so until and unless everyone gets tired of Brandon Aiyuk sending Instagram messages, this is going to be a storyline that takes us through the summer.” From The Insiders on : The Brandon Aiyuk saga, which got weird over the weekend, shows no sign of ending. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) The Commanders have been linked to Aiyuk from what felt like the moment things started to go awry in San Francisco, with Rapoport reporting that the two teams were back in April. Similar to the issues the two parties were having around the time of the 2026 NFL Draft, Rapoport reported again on Monday that the Commanders would prefer the 49ers to release Aiyuk so they can sign him as a free agent. As Rapoport noted, it is a game of chicken with no timeline hanging over either party, so this could go on for a while. As for Aiyuk, he has made it clear that he’d like to play for Washington, as the 28-year-old of him wearing a Commanders hat. Aiyuk last played in 2024, which is when he tore both his ACL and MCL in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, even before he opted to skip his rehab with the team and , things got ugly in the offseason before his injury. He and the 49ers engaged in a summer-long contract dispute that saw him request a trade before the two ultimately agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension. While Aiyuk seems to think his social media antics can expedite the process, neither party has budged thus far.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - Chad Ochocinco details why he understands Brandon Aiyuk's video message to 49ers

The in San Francisco can’t seem to find its inevitable conclusion just yet. In a posted Sunday on Instagram, the disgruntled 49ers wide receiver did not mince words when describing the team that signed him to a four-year, $120 million contract extension in 2024. “We’re dealing with, you know, like [those] kids when they don’t get picked for the basketball game at the court, but they’re the ones that brought the ball,” Aiyuk said in the video. “So they’re like, ‘All right, you all don’t want to pick me, I’m taking my ball, I’m going home.’ Ass boys. Little-ass boys.” “It’s inevitable. It’s coming. Stop running. Stop being a female dog. Stop being a little cat. Stop running from the belt.” While social media has had a mixed reaction toward Aiyuk’s video, former NFL veteran Chad Ochocinco understood where the 49ers wideout was coming from and explained what the message means based on his perspective. “A lot of people [are] probably not going to get it,” Ochocinco said on the show. “For us, you know, sometimes we say things in riddle format where others really don’t understand it. “Now, the concept and what it sounded like he’s trying to say is obviously I’m a 49er, and the other people that might want me. Instead of letting me go elsewhere, so someone else could have that same toy that the child is playing with, [the 49ers are] like, ‘Nah, I want to keep him here.’” Aiyuk has not played an NFL snap since suffering a torn ACL in Week 7 of the 2024 season. He had his guarantees voided for infractions last summer and currently is on San Francisco’s reserve/left squad list. While the 49ers have been , John Lynch and Co. have not made any moves yet to finally end the wide receiver’s rocky tenure in San Francisco. “He wants out so bad that he was willing to give up that kind of money and say, ‘You know what, I want to get out of here so bad I’m going to give you all that back just to get my freedom to go elsewhere,’ ” Ochocinco added. “I’ve never seen anything like it before. A lot of people obviously won’t understand the context unless you’ve been a part of the business and understand how the business works and understand that. “And he’s just doing everything he can to be able to get out of there, which is why he was willing to give that money up so he can go somewhere else… He might not get a long-term deal, but I think he’s going to get a deal. You’re going to come in here and prove it. You’ve got to come in here and prove yourself.” Aiyuk’s message was posted days after the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office issued him an for a misdemeanor exhibition of speed, which stems from a video he posted of himself driving more than 100 miles per hour along Levi’s Stadium in December. Based on the video, there seems to be some animosity coming from Aiyuk with the 49ers still keeping him on the roster, considering how shaky the relationship between the two sides has been in the last two years. While the 28-year-old’s future in the NFL is uncertain, one thing remains clear: San Francisco eventually will move on from Aiyuk one way or another. It will just be a matter of time.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - Why former 49ers QB Alex Smith sees Kyle Shanahan, Andy Reid similarities

A quarterback sees the game through a lens like no other on the field. Head coaches and are elite at their craft, and former 49er had a great perspective when comparing two of the greatest offensive minds in the game. “You’ve got a chance every year with Kyle,” Smith .” “I think he’s one of the best head coaches in football. He reminds me a lot of when I went to Kansas City with Andy. Andy at that point was widely regarded as an amazing head coach and offensive mind, but hadn’t won the big one yet.” Reid spent 14 seasons in Philadelphia without winning a Super Bowl. He won his first title in 2020 with the help of Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Shanahan is entering his 10th season in San Francisco, and he’s still chasing that Vince Lombardi Trophy. “He’s a guy I wish I could’ve played for,” Smith continued. “Kyle’s been on the doorstep how many times now? It’s going to happen, there’s going to be an avalanche, and we are going to be talking about him on Mount Rushmore.” When you think of offensive minds in today’s NFL, Reid and Shanahan are right up there with and . Unfortunately for Shanahan, the 49ers had to play those two elite playcallers a total of five times last season. “Look at the division,” Smith said. “Arguably, the two best teams in football last year were in the division. Look at the 49ers’ track record against them. Look at how well they played them. Given all the adversity in what everyone expected to be a down year.” Injuries took a massive toll on the 49ers last season. With being sidelined for eight games, Shanahan still was able to improvise with backup QB , going 5-3 in eight starts. Tonges TD! Mac Jones goes 5/5 on the opening drive to get the on the board. SFvsLAR on Prime Video Also streaming on — NFL (@NFL) “When you remain that competitive, you’re always going to have a chance,” Smith concluded. “And that’s all you can ask for. Get to the dance, have a chance, and hopefully some things go your way. As a 49er fan, we are lucky to have this guy.” Shanahan looks to follow in Reid’s footsteps by finally getting over the hump and capturing a Super Bowl ring.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - George Kittle shares two-word description to sum up 49ers rookie RB Kaelon Black

The 49ers’ 2026 NFL Draft results have drawn mixed reviews around the league, to say the least. Whether it’s their reliance on AI or trying to zag while everyone else is zigging, many of the team’s selections were . While fans and media members may not be impressed with some of the players selected, five-time raved about rookie running back Kaelon Black on Wednesday. When speaking to the media, Kittle kept his answer about Black brief, yet it was still quite effective. “Very fast,” Kittle said. “Very fast and very mature.” Although many were lower on the selection of Black due to the fact that he is 24 years old, Kittle highlighted the positives of what being an older rookie can mean for a team. “I like old rookies because they’re ready to play, and you don’t have to go through that immaturity part of the start,” Kittle said. “When you play with mature players, they kind of understand the sense of urgency, is what I would say. They’re just ready for it, and that’s been really cool.” with the No. 90 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after a career season at Indiana that saw him run for 1,040 yards and 10 scores during the Hoosiers’ 16-0 title run. While he won’t have to become a bell cow right away for the team with Christian McCaffrey still in the backfield, Black will have chances to carve out a prominent role of his own as a rookie. He also will have a chance to prove those who doubted him wrong in a big way.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - Baker Mayfield refuses to ‘sugarcoat' Mike Evans' departure from Bucs to 49ers

The 49ers made one of the biggest splashes of NFL free agency by signing six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver to a . The 6-foot-5 pass catcher, who posted 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons before an injury derailed his 2025 NFL season, is expected to provide some much-needed playmaking ability for a 49ers team that and actively is . While those around San Francisco are thrilled with the addition, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield to the media on Friday that Evans’ departure stings. “There’s no way to sugarcoat it,” Mayfield told reporters. “It’s disappointing not having him back. Just the caliber of player he is, he’s a Hall of Famer, deserved to be a Buc for life. Things happen, but luckily, him and I have a great relationship, we’ll still be friends for life, and I’ll be cheering him on except when we play them, if it comes down to it.” Video: Baker Mayfield, speaking at his young football camp, says Mike Evans leaving was disappointing but it’s a chance for other receivers to step up this season. — Greg Auman (@gregauman) Although Evans will be donning new threads for the first time in his career, he on Wednesday that he expects to have a similar role and play style in San Francisco. “You’ve got to win in tight situations down there in the red zone,” Evans said. “And I have the leaping ability, I have the awareness, and a lot of reps at doing it. And I love getting in that red area and adding a different dynamic to this team.” So, what was a huge loss for Mayfield and the Bucs could end up being a monumental addition for Brock Purdy and the 49ers as they look to.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - Brandon Aiyuk wears Commanders hat amid unending 49ers saga, arrest warrant

It already has been a … busy week for , to say the least. Santa Clara County issued an on Wednesday after Aiyuk posted a video last December in which he appeared to be driving at over 100 mph past Levi’s Stadium. On Saturday, the 28-year-old posted a pair of photos to , featuring him wearing a Washington Commanders hat. The second photo includes a caption with emojis that seems to say, “Stop the cap, the gig is up.” Another one from Aiyuk — OurSF49ers (@OurSf49ers) The meaning of the caption isn’t all that clear, but the Commanders hat feels like an intentional move as the 49ers continue to remain patient in this odd saga between them and Aiyuk dating back to his ACL injury in 2024. for the embattled, but talented receiver, given that his tenure in San Francisco is almost certainly over. Additionally, Aiyuk played alongside in college while both were at Arizona State in 2019. However, both the 49ers and other teams interested in Aiyuk reportedly have with him in recent months. Perhaps this not-so-subtle social-media statement could be a sign that things are picking up steam as San Francisco seeks to trade the wideout.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - Where ESPN's Football Power Index ranks 49ers among top Super Bowl 61 contenders

While some around San Francisco might feel the 49ers have missed , ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) data indicates otherwise. Earlier this week, ESPN’s Seth Walder detailed some of his biggest takeaways from Wednesday’s Arguably, the most eye-catching numbers centered on which team had the best chance at winning Super Bowl LXI at the end of the 2026 NFL season. As Walder explained, the 49ers’ NFC West rivals, the Los Angeles Rams, already were the favorites to be the last team standing before . As expected, the move only improved their chances, bringing their odds to 14.9 percent. However, the 49ers aren’t too far behind, as they have the fifth-best chance of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Sitting right behind the defending-champion Seattle Seahawks (7.0 percent), the FPI gives the 49ers a 6.8 percent chance of winning the Super Bowl next season. Best chance to win the Super Bowl – ESPN FPI Rank Team Chance Rank Team Chance 1 Rams 14.9% 9 Chargers 4.4% 2 Bills 10.7% 10 Eagles 4.1% 3 Ravens 9.4% 11 Bengals 4.0% 4 Seahawks 7.0% 12 Texans 3.2% 5 49ers 6.8% 13 Jaguars 2.9% 6 Lions 5.2% 14 Patriots 2.7% 7 Chiefs 4.9% 15 Broncos 2.6% 8 Packers 4.7% 16 Cowboys 2.6% For those wondering how these numbers are conjured up despite the fact we haven’t see new additions like , Walder broke down exactly how the FPI is crafted. “FPI’s preseason predictive ratings are primarily based on win totals from the betting market in conjunction with each team’s schedule — along with factors such as the difference between a team’s starting and backup quarterback and a special teams rating that incorporates specific kickers,” Walder wrote. “We use these ratings to simulate the season thousands of times, with the results forming our projections.” With three of the four NFC West teams included in the top five, it’s clear that next season could be a bloodbath between the trio of rivals. As for the 49ers fans who walked away from this past season’s 12-5 record and divisional-round playoff exit as the beginning of the end, the numbers as of right now indicate that San Francisco could have another run in it.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - New 49ers DC gloats over Brock Purdy interception after being ‘tortured' by QB

New hasn’t been in the Bay Area too long, but even he knows how special it is to pick off . When speaking to the media after Wednesday’s OTA session, Morris was asked for his thoughts on how looked. As opposed to doing what every defensive coach hates and speaking highly of a signal-caller, Morris took a fun jab at Purdy, alerting the media that the defense picked him off. “We got a Brock pick today,” Morris said. “I let him know that right after practice. That was awesome. He’s going to be so mad at me for telling the media that, but you guys were there. That’s a big one.” Arguably, the best part was the fact that a media member reminded Morris that there was a second pick, who then joked that he didn’t get a chance to brag because he forgot. When a follow-up asked whether or not Purdy has been turning it over frequently, Morris quickly eased the minds of 49ers fans. “No, no, no. I wouldn’t say a lot,” Morris said. “He is the layer king. He’s so accurate. He puts the ball in the right spot. He keeps the ball in his hands. He’s tortured me for years. And it’s so nice to be around him.” Morris is heading into his first season with San Francisco after spending the last two years , compiling a 16-18 record. Although things didn’t necessarily work out with his previous team, he is widely viewed as one of and expectations are sky high for this unit.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - 49ers' George Kittle pushing for ‘realistic' Week 1 return from Achilles injury

SANTA CLARA — is happy. This is nothing new for the 49ers’ All-Pro tight end, who starts every press conference with a jovial, “Howdy.” However, the news that Kittle could be of the 2026 season might have explained his heightened positive state Wednesday. “Realistic, yes,” Kittle said on his being ready for the start of the season. “Even when I had the surgery, [Dr. Neil] ElAttrache told me, ‘I think if you do everything the right way, you have a chance.’ Definitely ignites something and makes you push for it. We are on track. We are ahead of schedule.” As Kittle navigated through that occurred at the end of the season, his spirits were always positive. At several public appearances throughout the offseason, including supporting his wife Claire, who was recently a model for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Kittle’s attitude and positive spirit have never wavered. “Me personally, I’m doing awesome,” Kittle said. “My wife is a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, good for me, and my Achilles is doing great. No setbacks in my recovery, checking all the boxes, doing everything I’m supposed to do. “My surgeon is super happy, my physical therapist in L.A. who works with him is super happy, Niners are happy, I’m happy.” With the cancellation of the 49ers’ mandatory minicamp, Kittle is set to head back to his home in Nashville, where he spends the offseason training at his own facility. The nine-year NFL veteran likely will continue his checkups with his doctor and physical therapist in Los Angeles while preparing for the season. If Kittle is not quite ready for the start of the season, the 49ers will lean on Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges, who saw additional playing time when Kittle missed games with a calf injury during Weeks 2 through 6 of the 2025 season. Brayden Willis, entering his fourth season with San Francisco, could be an option. Undrafted free agent Khalil Dinkins has quickly shown his abilities on the field, along with Hayden Rucci, who has appeared in four NFL games as a member of the Detroit Lions. Both young players will be competing for a role on the offense. But for now, the hope is that to kick off the season on Thursday, Sept. 10, when the Los Angeles Rams will “host” the 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Australia. “Playing four days early and a 16-hour flight?” Kittle said with a smile when asked if the extended travel would be an issue. “No, not at all. Just another challenge, that’s all it is. We fly so much, our average flight is five to six hours. So to me, it is what it is. We are going to work, it’s an awesome opportunity to play in Australia. It will be a really fun plane ride home if we win. “That’s our goal — play in front of an awesome crowd, huge stadium, 110,000 people. Sounds sick to me, might as well take advantage of it.” As usual, Kittle’s view always is positive.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - Trent Williams roasts Rams for ‘cover up' ahead of Week 1 game in Australia

Trent Williams has an interesting theory on why the 49ers will face the Rams in Australia and Los Angeles fans might not be happy with it. “I mean, it took away a home game in my opinion,” Williams told reporters on Wednesday. “It’s probably why we have to go to Australia to play the Rams to kind of cover up some of the deficiencies when it comes to the ticket sales on that game when we go to LA. I’ll just leave it at that.” "I mean, it took away a home game in my opinion.
[NBC Sports Bay Area] - How Kyle Shanahan rewarded 49ers for dedication to offseason program, OTAs

It’s always nice to be rewarded for a job well done – yes, that’s even the case for NFL athletes. Following a successful week of OTAs for San Francisco and perfect attendance from the 49ers players, coach Kyle Shanahan and the team’s coach announced on Wednesday they would cancel next week’s mandatory minicamp – the phase of training this week was considered voluntary. Coach Kyle Shanahan has canceled next week's mandatory minicamp as a reward for 100-percent attendance this week and the work put in during the 49ers' offseason program, a team official says. — Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) In addition to the team’s strong week and attendance, San Francisco’s grueling travel schedule this season might have played some part in the decision, as well. The 49ers will travel this season – t – as they not only fly to Australia to face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1 but also head to Mexico in Week 11 to square off against the Minnesota Vikings. The decision to cancel next week’s training will give the team about 50 days before the at the SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara on July 23.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - 49ers' Trent Williams drops blunt, two-word assessment of Myles Garrett trade

The NFL world was set ablaze on Monday when it was reported that the Los Angeles Rams had traded for reigning Defensive Player of the Year . Like most who live outside of the greater Los Angeles area, 49ers star left tackle Trent Williams had a blunt way of putting the rival’s addition. “It sucks,” Williams on Wednesday, saying that he feels the same way as everyone outside of Rams country. Garrett, 30, led the NFL in sacks last season while breaking the league record with 23 sacks in a single year and currently leads the NFL among active players with 125.5 career sacks. For the Rams, this isn’t the first time they went “all in,” per se. , the team traded starting quarterback Jared Goff and three draft picks – including two first-round picks — for Matthew Stafford. That decision led to the franchise winning its first title in more than two decades as they defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl LVI – a title game played at the Rams’ home field, SoFi Stadium. Fast forward five years and Super Bowl LXI is slated to be played in Inglewood, Calif., at that same stadium come next February. For the 49ers and 30 other teams, they’re hoping history doesn’t repeat itself.

[NBC Sports Bay Area] - 49ers' Mike Evans looking to reprise his familiar role for new QB Brock Purdy

Mike Evans is looking to play a valuable role for new 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Not only could the veteran be San Francisco’s No. 1 wide receiver during the 2026 NFL season, but he could offer his new quarterback something the 49ers offense has not had much of throughout Purdy’s four seasons in the league: A tall, big-bodied red zone threat who can come down with contested touchdown catches. “You’ve got to win in tight situations down there in the red zone,” Evans told reporters Wednesday. “And I have the leaping ability, I have the awareness, and a lot of reps at doing it. And I love getting in that red area and adding a different dynamic to this team. “I just pride myself on getting in the end zone, winning versus bad leverage, and one-on-one opportunities. I’ve got to get open for Brock.” Evans signed a three-year, $42.5 million this offseason, and is enjoying developing a in Organized Team Acitivies (OTAs). “Love Brock,” Evans said. “He’s a big reason why I came here … Throws a really great ball. I’m getting the timing down with him now. Super smart. He’s about his business, too. Comes to work every single day. “He’s a quiet guy, but me and him talk about not just football, but life, and really cool guy. I look forward to having a great connection with him this year.” The 49ers, with running back Christian McCaffrey, tight end George Kittle and young wide receivers Ricky Pearsall and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling, have no shortage of offensive weapons, so if Evans can produce similar to how he has throughout his impressive 12-year NFL career, the offense should be in very good shape. “I just want to continue to do what I’ve been doing my whole career, and that’s making plays, being the ultimate team player, and the ultimate playmaker,” Evans added. “That’s what I really want. And just let these guys know not to take this s–t for granted because you never know what could happen. “And our roster is a great roster. We stack up with the best of the best in the league, so just not taking these opportunities for granted.”
