Every virus specialist I've talked to agrees with this sentiment and doctors are aware of the psychological issues we're seeing (according to scientific research). It seems they are trying to strike a balance with an ever-changing virus.@robert2112o @DarrenSabedra @mercnews @MikeNowels @ElliottAlmond @leftwich @MitchMashMax @SacBee_JoeD @latsondheimer @ocvarsity It’s a very meaningful part of their life. The physical excercise, the friendships, the memories of good teams and seasons and games. The ups and downs. Sports offer a ton of life experiences that don’t some from other endeavors.Beat Writer / Columnist
Check out a U. of Florida study published in Lancet last week. It's an early indicator about youth to adult transmission and my takeaway is we need way more investigation into this before understanding the ramifications.@robert2112o @DarrenSabedra @mercnews @MikeNowels @ElliottAlmond @leftwich @MitchMashMax @SacBee_JoeD @latsondheimer @ocvarsity It's not about the kids. It's about the families that they go home to. The kids get sick then get their parents sick. Sure, if you go to boarding school, keep going... But if you are coming home to unvaccinated parents, that's a great way to get them sick.Beat Writer / Columnist
Feeling for you Coach Roberts. It is a mess. We need definitive guidelines.Beat Writer / Columnist
Hank, the Wisconsin has been roundly criticized by medical experts, including the U. of Wisconsin. @CIFState medical advisory committee says study is purely anecdotal and problematic. As Jeff said, we need real data to help guide us.@ElliottAlmond There was a study that came out of Wisconsin as well as a study out of Michigan. The one in Michigan, they tested everyone 3 times a week like the acc mode.Beat Writer / Columnist
Jeff, thank you. A lot of data is bandied about but you highlight the issue. W/out testing we don't know much about youth sports transmission rates good or bad. We do know young people are less at risk of dying from the virus, per CDC.@DarrenSabedra @mercnews @MikeNowels @ElliottAlmond @leftwich @MitchMashMax @SacBee_JoeD @latsondheimer @ocvarsity As far as I know there’s no true data on impact of youth sports on infection rates (good/bad)? Without consistently testing those kids/participants on a wide scale in disciplined cadence (similar to pro and college protocols) we will not know. This data set is the missing link.Beat Writer / Columnist
This is devastating news for our local high school athletes. Pandemic driven health and safety concerns should also take into account the mental health of these students. I hope the county will reconsider these restrictions.Beat Writer / Columnist
